Redefining the Impossible

Posts made during April 2004

Discovered Mozilla DOM inspector. Ctrl-shift-i to open it, get an interesting tree view of the elements, previews of values and a view of the page with flashing highlights so you can see where the elements are. Also allows quick access to the .CSS file. Might be useful, the kind of thing you forget is available.

Hum, it seems you can edit the CSS elements and watch the effect. Now that IS useful.

Hum, my google entry has expanded a bit:

Peter's Blog Peter's Blog. All the action as it happens. Latest. Prev, Fri 19 Mar 2004, 20:57:41. Tech. Updated website with FileZilla. Best FTP client I've used. ... www.bisiand.me.uk/ - 12k - Cached - Similar pages

It went down to being a one liner (Peter's Blog) but now it is back to it's former glory. Google still does not index any other pages, particulary the archive and the older entries. In fact, indexing the latest news, as it does, is not good because if anyone clicks it they will get the latest news, not what they were searching for.

I have resisted the urge to open a google email account with 1G of storage. I'll wait till tomorrow to see if it was an April Fools joke.

Looking in logs, GoogleBot has poked around a bit:

MetaTagRobot is that meta tag analyser that I tried. Odd that google had a search just before...

After about 18 years of PC use I have decided to do it, I've changed my work PC from US keyboard to UK. Every other PC I use is like this, my laptop at home is UK (to avoid confusing my wife) my work PC and home desktop PC were the last bastions. Lets give it a try: @#"|`. There is one good thing about it: ££££££££. Now that is nice.

Did background update of home server using dselect via ssh. Something like 63 packages were upgraded, things like nfs and openoffice dictionary that I don't need. SSL update said a restart was advised so I rebooted the box. It hasn't rebooted, it's offline. What can be wrong?

Set Palm up so record button opens BigClock. Pressing and holding the select button brings up the World Clock app but the delay is annoying.

Downloaded a star trek theme for BigClock to make palm look more like a tricorder. Needs some flashing leds.

For palm buttons, I now have:

Button 1

Zlauncher

Button 2

DateBk5

Button 3

DayNotez

Button 4

Zlauncher Quicklaunch

Record

BigClock

Looking at server, system booted but network is down. Ran::

/etc/init.d/networking

and got an error in line 9 of /etc/network/interfaces.

The line in question was ::

Broadcast

and the error was because there was no address given.

I tried running a couple of init commands with restart parameters but no joy (ping failed DNS).

I rebooted the system (last resort for linux) and this fixed it. So something broke my config.

Set up ntp on server as it's clock had drifted a few minutes. Seems to work nicely. I was going to do something with the windows Xp clocks until I discovered that they already do it.

Set up ipcheck (http://ipcheck.sourceforge.net/) to check if my ip address changes and tell http://dyndns.org about it. The -r option is useful as it tells it to use http://checkip.dyndns.org/ to get the ip address, it doesn't try to parse the routers web based files. I could set this up and check more often without thrashing dyndns's server but it works as it is. ipcheck does not check the Dlink DI624 natively. If I was more public spirited I could find out how and tell the world.

Read here about cron http://www.tech-geeks.org/contrib/mdrone/cron-howto.html and set up a cron job to check the dns once an hour.
