Redefining the Impossible

Ubuntu Fluxbox

Got Ubuntu running fluxbox desktop manager instead of gnome:

  • install fluxbox via dselect or apt:
    sudo apt-get install fluxbox

  • edit ~/.xsession and add the following:
    exec /usr/bin/fluxbox

I'm happy with fluxbox as a window manager. It's nice an minimalist and it boots much faster than kde/gnome which seem bloated by comparison. On an old Pentium 1 200MHx with 96M of ram anything more is asking too much.

Hmmm. I'll have to test that. If it works fine I'll consider changing to Ubuntu.

Does the FluxBox menu have any pre added ubuntu config app menu items? Ie, if you you want to do some system settings is it possible with FluxBox or do I have to start Gnome again?

I don't use it much in this mode and I cannot remember how much it has been customised for Ubuntu applications. As I recall it had everything there that I needed and anything else can be booted from a terminal.
