Redefining the Impossible

Slicehost Progress Report

A short update on my Slicehost vps which I have had for two months now. I love it. It's fast, reliable and I have no criticisms of it whatsoever. I've cancelled my vpslink vps and I will cancel site5 once the contract runs out. All my eggs in one basket (ok, two if you count the rsync.net backups). Slicehost offer backups but:

  • they cost $15 a month
  • you only get three
  • they are snapshots of your live system and hence will back up the trojans, root kits or whatever your system has succumbed to
  • rsync.net is independent

TODO: learn capistrano.

I don't get the rsync.net bit - had a look and they cost a minimum of $1.60 per GB per month.

So for the $15 Slicehost backup (which is for the 1G Slice?) you get 3 x 40GB backups which can be restored with a click of a button.

With rsync it will be something like $190 per month (for the same thing but there are some discounts for higher storage) and the hassle of trying to get it back on the Slice.

I don't see how this is better?

Yes you get more storage space in the rsync.net backups but they are straight snapshots of your disk. I am only backing up my most important data, not the operating system etc.

Also I am free to restore my backups wherever I like, not just to Slicehost.
