Redefining the Impossible

WoW News Issue 204

Long Time Quiet

I didn't play wow for about six weeks. I just had more interesting things to do. It was great, wake up in the morning and instead of jumping out of bed to play I would cuddle the wife etc. No dreaming about wow, focusing on the matters at hand instead.

I'm playing again now but less obsessively and it is better. I still cuddle the wife in the mornings and play once or twice a week. I'm not going to blog about it daily.

Maezyn

Maezyn (Markswoman hunter) is now 48. Levelling her is much faster now with lots of rest bonus and the generally faster levelling: she went 46-48 in less than three hours. Playing her feels harder than playing Maevyn (Beastmistress hunter) as she gets agro more often but it is rarely more than an annoyance.

For the forties she has been running Tanaris and Feralas. She dealt with the Tanaris pirates easily enough but probably because I'm much better at pulling than I was before. I'm going to send her next to Swamp of Sorrows and make sure she is in Blasted Lands soon to train one of the boars there: Beefy is long, long overdue training in charge and gore (there is a huge gap in boars to train between the 20's and 48-49). At 49 I'm also tempted by the rare spawn white flying snake thing in Feralas, just to try out for a bit.

Leatherworking
Leatherworking is getting hard. The stuff she can make is lagging behind her level. The mail armour she can make requires extended time killing Scorpids or Turtles and doesn't seem worth the hassle.
Skinning
Maezyn hit 300 when she was level 47. She skins at every opportunity and still loves it.

Maexyn

Maexyn is 27 and playing her is a bit harder due to Warlock nubiness. At 25 she dealt with two level 29 Worgen but it blew all her cooldowns, she doesn't seem to walk things as easily as a hunter. Tackling three mobs seems hard, all about fearing and DoTing. While in theory she can pull with a DoT she isn't able to do it as well as a hunter, often getting adds. I think it because without tracking (for most types of mob) she cannot position herself at the optimum place.

With the Voidwalker killing seems slow: 20 seconds for >= her level mobs which gets boring. I've experimented with the Succubus and drain tanking and that is ok but she starts needing food/mana breaks.

Good thing about Warlock: soul stones.

Tailoring
languishing a bit. I'm not gearing Maexyn nearly enough.
Enchanting
languishing a bit.

Maevyn

She discovered a new transmute: primal earth->primal life. This can actually turn a profit (3g->10g) but not as good as her bread-and-butter primal earth->primal water (3g->20g). She has enough cash to buy Maez and Maex their epic land mounts, I'm not sure I will bother to get either a flying mount, it depends how the finances progress. I know, I know, warlocks get the fiery hooved mount at 40 but the level 60 quest looks expensive and tedious and anyway I'd MUCH rather Maexyn had a mechanostrider (pink?).

Warcraft Sigs

The site that does the warcraft sigs is broken. There is a mirror site but it smells of wow gold so the sigs are not being updated at the moment.

Hi Pete,

Welcome back. My obsession is continuing unabated. My main hunter has been 70 since mid Oct and my often neglected warlock has hit 50 and eyeing Ungoro. I decided that I wanted to see the end game stuff and I managed to find a great guild and have been really enjoying the progression aspects of high end raiding. While I am looking forward to the expansion and the solo questing that I enjoy (The only quests I have left are dailies and groups), the challenge of gearing up and taking on new areas of the game is very exciting.

So far I have cleared Kara, Grull's Lair, Void Reaver and about half of Zul Aman and run "heroic" versions of the instances for badges. We now have Kara "on farm" and completing it in about two nights. The difference from my first nervous trips to now is almost unbelievable. From uncontrolled wipe fests with people and mobs going everywhere, to controlled almost military execution by a team that knows thier class and jobs is great and very satisfying.

I was a bit similar to you when I first hit 70. Sort of what do I do now? My solution is to view gearing and raid progression as the new "levelling". I recall thinking that my gear was great and that I really knew how to play my character. However I soon discovered I was nowhere near ready for Karazhan and was struggling in even "normal" instances. I read BRK's gearing guide to Kara and so I dropped mining and blacksmithing and leveled skinning and leatherworking to craft the "Felstalker" set. Got the correct enchants on my gear. Did the Kara attunment quest line and thought I was good to go.

Fronted up to my first venture in Kara and promptly wiped the whole raid by not controlling my pet properly and pulling an entire extra group. L2play Noob!! To be honest it did not get a lot better quickly. Chain trapping through the Moroes fight will really test your skill! Let alone the casters.

So after 4 months at 70 I am now "epiced" out in purple gear. I still need a heap of stuff from Kara to enable me to really handle Zul Aman. And I should finally get my gear sorted just in time for the new patch when I can replace my hard earned "epics" with green trash drops. I guess thats how they keep 70's interested. lol

At the end of the day I am still enjoying it. I doubt that it would be the same if I did not have a great guild with people who understand that while raiding is important, if I have to go afk in the middle of a run to deal with kids then I do. Many of us are older and have kids so we set raid times later in the evening so it does not effect family life.

Cheers

Hi PJ,

Sounds like you are having fun. These days I have much less time to commit to playing (maybe once a week) so I've no chance of running Kara. However levelling Maez and Maex is proving enough to keep me playing although it's more for the challenge than for fun! By running two I am totally exploiting rest bonus, I'm just not going to bother playing without it. Rest bonus seems to last longer these day: I can go maybe two levels on a big chunk.

I'm toying with the idea of getting Maevyn to master transmutation but that's all I have planned for her. I'm not sure the economics of that would work out (4*primal might vs 16% more transmutation produce) but she's been stuck in ironforge for months. She dismissed Blink ages ago as he kept whining for food. Hunter makes a good auction alt: aspect of the cheetah between AH and mailbox!

Peter,

Not sure about transmuting. I'm sort of wishing I had an alchemist and herbolist. There are some amazing pots and flasks available at the high levels but unless you can make them yourself it is super expensive. I have almost given up on ever getting an epic flying mount. To do so I would need to stop raiding and farm gold for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately it is a catch 22. If you have epic flying there are a lot more daily quests that will make good money. I could probably sell a lot of my enchanting and leatherworking mats but I know I will need them at some stage and replacing them is either lots of time or gold.

Cheers

As a soloer I would say the epic flyer was the ultimate goal. Once you have that, what else is there? I still can't be bothered to strive for it though.

Maevyn's herb/alchemy was useful as she was levelling (e.g. underwater breathing pots, free (apart from vials) mana and health pots etc) and has been a nice money maker (transmutation paid for her epic mount and basic flying mount and she has the cash for Maex and Maez' epic mounts).

By contrast I am finding tailoring, leatherworking and enchanting harder to level and fairly useless to know. As is always the case, anything that can be crafted can be bought cheap in the AH (the best exception being transmuted stuff because of the 23 hour cooldown) and +3 health on bracers is negligible. I think they pay dividends at very high level but it's a lot of disenchanting/vendoring to get there.

Speaking of disenchanting, Maex has disenchanted loads of stuff by I am reluctant to aution any of it in case she will need it herself later to level the enchanting. Maex and Maez are not paying their way at all.

I still enjoy skinning smile

Hey just doing a /Wave.

Good to see your still playing and enjoying WoW at whatever level your still playing and enjoying the game. Whatever is fun for you to so thats what make the game enjoyable when you may not have as much time to play. All understandable that is.

Anyway i still drop by from time to time just to see if your still playing or write anything. Most the time i know your working on other things you enjoy doing. But still stop by for a read just in case you post something WoW related. I read a lot of blogs in other places, but i still read here as the first WoW Blog i ever read way back then which seem eons ago.

Maybe one day you get your Paladin to 70, who knows but hopefully its just fun to get him there all the same as well as your other characters. I still play and enjoy my Paladin but thats obvious because i still play the same one class, the same one character and though i have a few bank toons all bankers i really don't play alts in any capacity. I guess im just dedicated to one character to improve him to the best i can and try to move into the end game as far as i can till the next expansion when it comes.

Galo is doing just fine these days. 2 Epic Mounts, Exalted reps with lots of Factions, rest is revered with numerous with others. I've run 5 mans forever and was all fun tanking them all. Have being running Heroics a while and all fun for me and increasing my badge count all the time. I've had lots of tanking gear improvements. Ive found a small guild finally after being guildless for forever. Two weeks ago we started Kara as one of 2 Tanks. Last night we finished Kara after two weeks of learning and killing the bosses. It was fun. Kara is a really cool place and one to see at that. But the journey has been fun with ups and downs. But its a journey all the same. The key is to have fun whatever you do in the game whichever way you play the game. We all move at different paces.

Its still good to know you play and play for fun when you have the time to relax and play. Paladins are great in the end game because i know im there. Its a long road. Opportunity there as well for a good skilled Hunter for DPS. But im a dedicated paladin, always have and always been as how i have played. I remember finding your blog when i could barely understand how Seals and Judgements works. Thats a long way from there to the endgame and having my own blog. Hey all thanks to you as a helping hand along the way. Its ok if you don't play your paladin much these days. Just have fun when you play and whatever you do.

Along the way in the journey of a thousand miles, you made a difference when i needed a guide and a helping hand and because of that its made a difference to many others also through my blog. Why do i still read here......... because i still remember the guide that lent me a helping hand even though i'm raiding and in the endgame.

Hi Galo,

Thanks for visiting and glad I could be of assistance back in the day. Sorry I went off paladin play. Unfortunately whenever I try running pook I get bored very quickly. He isn't geared and seems mediocre however I spec him (Hunters are so easy to spec by comparison: beastmaster + agility = win).

Sounds like you have achieved a lot in the game. These days I am playing less than ever, don't have much time to commit, couldn't give fair input to a guild and still don't like pugs. That leaves me with soloing which I am happy with and Hunters and Warlocks are great soloing classes.

I noticed you in BRK's blogroll. Well done! When are you going to start selling Galo T shirts?

Peter
