Redefining the Impossible

Darnassus Likes Mae About 1000 more

I ran a few more Darnassus lowbie quests. It's silly how you click on a Beached Whale, swim and dive and click on a giant turtle skull and are rewarded with 400 reputation points, equivalent to five stacks of runecloth.

The questing moved on to Ashenvale. I ran around for a bit one-shotting mobs but I did get a bit bored with it. Less than 10000 rep to go now.

Taming the Beast

I had a hankering to try taming Rak'Shiri a rare spawn saber in Winterspring. He is a nice looking cat and has Dash three and I really fancied the challenge of getting him. It's a Hunter thing. I read up on it and got some tips on how to approach it (thottbot ftw).

I flew to Azshara and knocked off a silly quest to click on a book, then on to Winterspring. At Everlook I stabled Tiddles and summoned the level 55 Winterspring Owl I had tried before. I headed north towards Frostsaber Rock. On the way I abandoned the owl and tamed another owl, a level 57 Winterspring Screecher as this has an interesting AoE ability, the Screech. The screech was an AoE debuff, knocking the enemies attack points. The only noticable effect it had was to accidently aggro passing owls which would otherwise have remained neutral. The Owl was a good pet as soon as it was tamed, on a par with Tiddles.

I got to the hill overlooking Frostsaber Rock but no sign of my target. So many cats all around, level 57-60 but not hard to deal with: could finish off a level 60 in under 30 seconds. The stalkers are nasty, they appear from nowhere and all seem to be level 60.

I spent over half an hour there, I had realised the cat wasn't around and he's on a ten hour spawn timer so there was no point in waiting. I spent my time grinding on the cats, managing around 15000 XP/hr and collecting stacks of tiger meat. Not a productive use of time but I think I have realised one thing: I enjoy killing as a hunter more than I did with the paladin. With the Paladin killing things became a chore but it's not as bad with a hunter, I never get that 'here we go again' feeling.

I did the sensible thing: logged off for the night and came back 6am next morning. I looked around from my hill top but still no sign of him. I decided to wander around killing cats till I got bored. After five minutes I found him on the minimap! It's always good when this happens, my heart started beating fast, the thrill of the hunt! I abandoned the owl. dropped a freezing trap and lined him up for a concussive shot when another cat came along and I had to lure it into my freezing trap it and run. I got way from the cat but lost Rak'Shiri. There is no way Mae could kill one of these with melee and I have no kiting practise, although kiting would still be suicide, would run straight into more cats.

Now I was in trouble: surrounded by ferocious cats, some level 60 stealthed and no pet! I searched for Rak'Shiri, continually agroing cats and having to feign death. Died to three cats, not much I could do. Did the corpse run and carried on searching. Alchemy is useful: res and swig a wildvine pot which gives both health and mana. Thought about taming a very temporary pet but decided against to keep myself ready. In these situations my biggest worry is that another player will come along and kill my target. I had done a '/who winterspring' and there were four other players around and one was named 'noobhunter' or something with hunter in the name.

I found him again. He was alone. I laid the freezing trap, concussive shot, he was trapped and I started taming. Another stealthy cat appears! Argh. I have to ignore it and carry on taming. Would the cat attacking me interrupt the taming? The trap breaks and Rak'Shiri is attacking me too, what hope is there? But it worked! He was tamed and started attacking the other cat. I was panicky now, I had him but he was very unhappy and needed feeding but he was fighting. I used an unusual tactic: I let Mae die, ressed at the spirit healer, summoned him and fed him. There was no point in struggling to get away, I was finished in Winterspring anyway.

When he was wild, amongst the other cats he stood out, he is shiny blue and has green eyes that glow in the dark. Once tamed he seems, well, average. He doesn't stand out at all, no more impressive to me than King Bangalash. I've got him, I rose to my challenge but ultimately I don't think I will keep him. I have Dash 3 to teach to Tiddles and I have the story to tell. Tiddles is still one of the more exclusive pets in the game.

UPDATE: In Darnassus Rakky looks like this:

images/Rakky.jpg

Too damn good looking, argh. Do I need anything other than two cats? I've already called him Rakky, think I'm stuck with him, at least for now.

UPDATE2: Damn, more I look at this picture the more I like this cat. I think maybe I had been looking at Winterspring cats for too long when I made my initial judgement. Maybe Mae will be the Crazy Saber Lady with three Sabers: Tiddles, Rakky and Epic. Kinda fitting as all three would have taken some effort to get hold of. Now to wait for blizz to come up with an epic flying saber. How long would I grind rep for one of those?

See what I mean about the shoulders sad

Onwards and Upwards

Hearthed to Shattrath and hence on to Western Plaguelands to finish off the Cauldron quests. These weren't very difficult: the third Cauldron Lord spouted some bravado words to 'Cat' (haven't named him) but still died in nine seconds. Bestial Wrath ftw.

The turnins and a bit of grinding dinged Mae to 58.

That's the onwards part, upwards would be to Outlands, after all it is another planet which is pretty far up. But do I want to go there yet? I think Mae is ready, I'm impressed with how she handled the level 60 cats. However, I don't feel I'm in a hurry, she still has business in Azeroth, especially doing more Darnassus lowbie quests: only two levels to go to get that Saber! Right now there is probably more new stuff for me to do in Azeroth than in Outlands: done Hellfire Peninsular once, not in a hurry to do it again.

Hey Peter, I'm getting lost with all the pets you have/had - can you list them briefly with their name and type; it'll make it easier to match your opinions with the pet type.

Thanking you.

p.s. I'm sticking with Denis(e) the ghostly sabre, still the best looking and I constantly get comments about her.

Hum, ok let's recap:

Colin (7): Ice Claw Bear from Dun Morogh, first pet, loved him, good tank but missing dash/dive/charge.

Unnamed Moonstalker (14): picked up as a temp on the way to get Tiddles. He was level 14 and raised a few levels while I killed naga. He was a good little cat. Black and white stripes, like pyjamas, I liked him.

Tiddles (20): ghost saber, what more can I say. Mae is killing things too quickly and dash always seems to be on cooldown, apart from that, Tiddles is definitely going to see 70.

Ravager (?): a temporary pet in Darkshire, trained up to learn bite or claw. Ok but lacking dash.

Scorpid (?): a temporary pet in Desolace, trained up to learn bite or claw. Ok but lacking dash.

Crocolisk (?): another temporary from Duskwallow Marsh to learn bite/claw. Ok but lacking dash.

KB (43): King Bangalash, nice looking cat but statistically identical to Tiddles so didn't hold onto him as no point in levelling two identical pets. Also seemed very common: can't go into AH without seeing a KB, almost as bad as voidwalkers.

Beefy (48): Ashmane Boar. Oh how I miss him, I am still kicking myself for abandoning him. Charge is such a good talent. Also came with Gore which is a more efficient dps talent than Claw or Bite.

Zaricotl (55): buzzard, very poor 'out the box', not impressive, no bite or claw and wasn't motivated to train him at all. I abandoned Beefy for this?

Winterspring Owl (55): now he was a useful pet out the box, came with high level claw and was immediately useful. He had dive which is a differnet name for dash and didn't 'feel' any different to running Tiddles, apart from the flapping wings (which don't bother me).

Winterspring Screecher (57): a temporary owl pet but very good, again as good as Tiddles. Handled level 60 cats amazingly well. Not sure the screech ability makes any difference. Never got him the training points to learn Cobra Reflexes but still a good fighter, and only trained in Growl.

Rak'Shiri (57): what more to say, as good as Tiddles. Tiddles is the benchmark, basically Rak'Shiri is just another cat. No problem running him in plaguelands and I haven't trained him in anything more than Growl 6. Dash 3 seems a bit faster than Dash 2 but again always seems to be on cooldown.

I might try out a Scorpid if I get the chance as the 'sting' ability sounds good: a DoT that stacks. At level 60 I will definitely get a Plagueswine from Eastern Plaguelands as I miss Beefy's Charging so much (levelling another beefy from 49 would be too painful and these are the only other high level boars). At level 64 I fancy a Warpstalker. After that I don't know, an attractive looking tank pet to complement Tiddles and her dps (although the difference between a tank and dps pet is negligible). BRK makes a good case for Windserpents but again I would have to wait a few levels for one of those (or go into Zul'Garub and train a level 60 elite 'Son of Hakkar' which would be another challenge).

Bascially, I'm not a patient man and I don't like waiting for the pet to reach the target before I can start blasting. Apart from that I find most pets are almost indistinguishable in their fighting.

Oh Beefy, /sob.

Thanks for that, very useful info. Looks like I'll be keeping hold of the sabre and complimenting her at 48 with the boar, although thinking about it I do have a yet-to-be-named Bellygrub in my stable right now so maybe I should be using him (her?) more often right now.

As for voidwalkers (excellent tanks, very rarely lose aggro), they cost a soul shard to summon and as soul shards don't stack (which means they take up valuable bag space) they don't tend to get dismissed and usually end up annoying people with their massive bulk in the AH while the lock searches for gear, etc.

Any further thoughts about life after 70 (or before if you get bored)? Are you going to start hitting the raids (which, after reading some of your past posts, will probably involve switching guilds to find one that raids at times more suited to yourself) or create a new character?

Bellygrub looks good to me if he doesn't need excessive levelling. I find levelling the pet is getting harder and harder as Mae levels which is why I don't want to try levelling a level 48 boar up: they only get experience from kills, not quests, and Mae would go up two and a half levels before the Boar got to 58 and as you may know, levelling takes longer and longer as you go up: Mae would get a level 60 boar sooner by waiting till she is 60 and training one!

My guild appears to be growing at the moment: every night there are a couple more people online. I will wait and see what happens, whether an early evening five man team forms. I like my guild, they are good people and there is little politics or friction. I'm sure I would have no trouble getting help in anything were I to ask (like the portal to Shatt). I don't think there is any pressure on me from the guild to take any particular course: I have a Beastmaster Hunter and a Retribution Pally but they still haven't thrown me out!

BTW being hearthed in Shatt is very useful. If you can get a portal there, at any level, I recommend it.

OK, questions as follows:

1. If you had the choice of Tiddles or Beefy, which one would you pick?

2. I haven't been to Shatt yet, why would you recommend a visit at any level?

Regarding the stability of the guild, in my past experience guilds tend to self-implode at the point were they reach sustained raiding as not getting raid invites/losing out on rare gear/arguing about raid tactics causes endless friction - if your guild can avoid that, stick with them as they'll probably outlast a lot of other guilds (my current army of characters are as yet guildless and will remain so until I meet the right people to join up with - the drawback of this is of course the endless spamming of signing guild charters and invites thrust in my face every time I'm in SW or IF - very, very annoying)

Peter Says:

1. Heart would say Tiddles since I have had her longest and she looks nicest, Head would say Beefy. I think in this case heart would win.

2. Shatt has portals to all the major cities so getting from one continent to another is a snap: hearth to shatt, go to portals, go to convenient city. For example, to get from winterspring to western plaguelands this morning I hearthed to shat, portaled to ironforge then flew while I got my breakfast. Compare this to two flights and a boat trip. A level 60 something mage can portal you to shatt or a warlock can summon you there, then find an inn (I use aldor, you have to go up a lift) and make it hearthing home. The only downside is you may have to run to a local inn to rest at the end of a questing session rather than hearth and /exit but if you are questing across continents it is overall much better.

My guild is still young and isn't really into a karazhan groove yet: they are still attuning. The politics may come later but again I can wait and see. If I join another random guild I could drop myself into worse problems.

I know the guild charter spamming, right in your face. Best reason to join a guild.

I currently have a nightsaber stalker named shadow, ressan the needler who i named ressan,(a white bat), and i dont know what my last pet should be. Im thinking of either a black raptor, or the clutchmother(blue and red tallstrider). I am currently in the blackdragons guild, but might start my own guild named "The Blue army (Blood Elf Slayers)"The problem is i dont have enough money. I plan on having the black raptor if i stick with the blackdragons, but having the clucthmother if i start my own guild. (it goes well with the guild names)

I was going to have both the black raptor and the clutchmother, but then someone took my on some wild adventure to get ressan. Catching him was just for fun but then i got attached to him and decided to keep him. I have a story with him like you do with rakky. But the problem with him is he doesn't seem to grow a loyalty lvl. ive had him for 2 hours and he is still layalty lvl 1.

Can u plzz help me,

oh and are there any other pets you reccomend.

You don't mention what level you or your pet are. I'm not 100% certain but I think that if you are level 60 and you go out and tame a level 60 pet and then fight with it, it will not start earning loyalty until you ding 61. Certainly it will then start gaining experience and levelling but I noticed this with my boar BeefyII, he didn't start gaining loyalty until Mae got to 61. It's only a problem in that you cannot bang on extra training as you have no points. However, the most important training is growl which doesn't cost any training points.

Boars are good pets:

  • Charge ability makes them quick into battle
  • Charge stuns the opponent and generates big threat
  • Boars also have 'Gore' which is a powerful damage booster.
