Redefining the Impossible

WoW Daily News Issue 85

The grinding in Zangarmarsh has taken its toll and right now I am sick of playing WoW. I've played every day for five months and I feel I need a break. What I am feeling is not just boredom but, like the daily commute to work, I am hating it. It may just be the tedious pally fighting style but the repetition has become too much, from the judge seal of crusader to start a fight to the flash of lights to top up the health at the end of a fight. I estimate that to get to level 70 from where I am now I will need to go through at least 2100 more fights. I get no excitement from fighting or satisfaction at the outcome, unless I die in which case I feel I have failed.

As a blacksmith I can see the progression of weapons I will be weilding at each level as I go up, each one about 2 dps more than the previous one, carefully structured so that as the monsters become more difficult I will be no better off. To get nice blue weapons I either have to grind rep or raid. Grinding rep is even more boring than quest grinding and I am not getting any raiding in because my guild raids at times that are not convenient to me and my lack of raid experience makes me reluctant to ruin a pug.

For this week I plan to do other things, then I will see how I feel. I may well blog about other things in the meantime, taking the blog back to it's roots. You can get a listing of exclusively warcraft related stuff here if the more useful stuff annoys you.

I saw copies of the new Lord of the Rings online game in Woolworths. I'm not tempted to buy it but I can see that with more competition these kinds of games will have to offer something more than relentless grind if they are to keep people playing.

Most unfortunate to hear the grind just to advance is taking a toll on your play and enjoyment of the game. I'm not sure how the grinding is in Outland either other than your daily journal of it which to me of any and all the blogs i read is the most detailed and documented of anyone adventure in WoW. Do get the feeling though its allot of grinding in Outland.

However its ok for one to take a break sometimes if have to or for perspective then maybe return a bit fresh. On the otherside maybe there is another way to advance maybe without as much grinding, who knows. However during the downtime and moment of your reflection away from the game, your daily blog will be missed i'm sure. It will be missed by me at least. Before i read my own email everyday i always check your WoW blog.

Hey go do some stuff with your family, go catch a movie, do something fun. Your WoW character gona still be there, if anything your gonna have max rest bonus when you return so leveling should be a little easier.

Peter Says:

I'm just taking a break, I'm not going to go crazy and delete the character, I'm going to chill for a bit. I've got other commitments I should be progressing, things I've been sidelining to play WoW.

I've got a cold and I've had feverish nights dreaming about PvP fights, rock-scissors-paper things about rogues killing mages, mages killing paladins etc. If WoW is having this kind of subconscious effect on me I really need a break.

It's probably trying to grind rep in Zangarmarsh that tipped me over the edge, killing endless Marsh Striders and Spore Bats and getting precious few fertile spores. However I've finished all the non-group Zangarmarsh quests so when I go back I'll move on to Terrokar forest. A change of scenery might help. A Petrified Lichen Shield would have been nice but the sporregar can stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

Regarding rest bonus, ever since my farming trip in Winterspring my rest bonus has been off the scale, I level up and it's still over 90%. I don't know if it works differently in outlands. Level 63-64 is about 650,000 XP so rest bonus is vital.

Bolix I'll actualy have to start playing now :) I'm sure the family will be pleased though.

Peter,

I sympathise with you, since ive been in zangamarsh I have not enjoyed the game. All the quest seem to be collect X from Y and the drop rate is nearly non existent. I was lucky in that Vyaaren was online and we completed a few quests together which alleviated the boredom slightly.

Im glad you have taken a break to do other things as WoW is only a game and if your not enjoying yourself then its a waste of your time.

If you do decide to return to your character I hope the next few levels provide some variation, also if you would like to run some group quest or instances for a change of pace please ask and will be happy to find a time when we can run some.

Enjoy yourself mate and take care.

Peter Says:

Thanks Floyd, it is interesting that you didn't like Zangarmarsh either. Is it a paladin thing or do you think all classes struggle? Maybe it is just a letdown after Hellfire Peninsular? The design is cool (big mushrooms etc), but the gameplay is more of the same but with annoying spore clouds.

Floyd Says:

I am guessing its not just Pally class finding it tough going as looking at Vyaaren's blog he feels the same about the place, I dont find it a struggle to take down the mobs there, I think its just a lack of variation in the quests, all I feel I have done there is collection quest from mobs and as said previously the drop rate is rubbish which frustrates me ( i know not every mob will drop what you need but when you need to take down 8 or 9 mobs each time, i feel it a bit extreme).

I hope also you dont completely give up on your Pally as after 5 months worth of play to get you where you are to finish with it would be a shame, I hope playing your alt can alleviate the grind a bit and you go back to the pally every now and again and just tick over till 70.

Peter Says:

I noticed he was trying out another alt. I did finish all the solo quests in Zangarmarsh, the only thing that defeated me was the level 63 elite who splits into three. My lay-on-hands was on cooldown but I'm still not sure I could have handled him.

I don't want to give up on the pally, he is 90% of the way to level 70. He's close to level 64 and the Seal of Vengence which will be nice to play with. With the alt I am having fun with a different fighting style, the paladin play is a bit samey, all you worry about is whether to use a one or two handed weapon and how to keep healing yourself. It's nice playing an awknowledged DPS class.

Peter

Sarah Says:

I think everyone gets to this stage. I had to have a break in the 60s, as Outland is trial, and being continually ganked is really demoralising, as well as the quests seeming a bit "samey", it all builds up. Sounds like you're having fun on your hunter - I love mine, it is a lot easier than playing a pally. :)

Heh, funny you should mention Ruby in your other blogs, we're just starting it at work, what a coincidence. :) I do PHP with MySQL, so Ruby on Rails is looking pretty nice right now. :)

Peter Says:

Small world: paladin, female dwarf, hunter and Ruby. Ruby is much nicer than php, php is a messy language, not elegant at all and they seem to be bodging object oriented features on top, they weren't designed in like python or ruby.
