Redefining the Impossible

Slingbox

The novelty of the Slingbox hasn't worn off after five days:

  • TV anywhere there is wifi
  • TV on pocketpc (hp rx1950) around the house: watch in bed without waking wife/baby
  • useable on wireless laptop where picture shows in a sidebar while I surf
  • Remotely control PVR (albeit painfully sluggishly: there is a lag in the video stream so when you do something you have to wait to see the effect)
  • Playback is pretty smooth, not crystal clear but watchable

It's the dog playing a piano thing, you just gasp that it does it at all, you don't really listen to the music.

The DVB tuner in the slingbox isn't as sensitive as the one in the humax PVR 9200T. The PVR receives all channels fine whereas the Slingbox struggles on the BBC channels where the signal is weaker, only 45% or so. I have the same problem with a cheapo Digimax freeview tuner that I bought in Tesco. Still, the Slingbox's tuner is only useful to me when the PVR locks up and it hasn't done that since I upgraded the firmware to 1.0.6 (fingers crossed).

In the Uk TMobile web n walk unlimited data plan for browsing on my MDA Compact 2 seamed the perfect partner for a slingbox from my NTL cable source, BUT heres the sting ,TMobile state in their small print that video streaming is not allowed and anyone caught will be put on an unusably slow connection or CUT OFF alltogether?!?! What I want is an unlimited use of my already paid for tv service across my mobile phone network which I have also already paid for. How many companies feel they have the right to have a bite of the cherry before my tv picture gets to my eyes. Just think how great things would be and move forward if mobile companies weren`t so greedy. They are slowing innovation by their greed. From, One very pissed off consumer.

Sounds like the situation with 'unlimited' broadband where they are introducing caps on bittorrent and limiting the download speed to 20kbps. Surely a 20kbps limit is not 'unlimited' broadband?

Anyway, I'd love to buy a copy of the Sling mobile player but I too live in the UK and sling are dragging their heels over letting anyone outside the US buy it. The 30 day trial came and went months ago.
