Redefining the Impossible

Sky By Broadband

Signed up for sky by Broadband which, as I am a sky movies subscriber, allows me to download said movies and watch them on my computer. The selection of movies is similar to the current selection on sky so it's kinda ok, not so bad that I ever get around to unsubscribing.

Sky By Broadband itself is heavily Microsoft DRMed but I don't really care. The files are circa 500M and they can be backed up to cd/dvd but you can only play them back on the pc you record them on. The licences to watch the films are time limited but the time limits are in the order of months. You have to download the whole film before you can watch it so it's not quite video on demand.

You are only allowed to register one pc in a household: I don't know if it's using my mac address to enforce this or what happens if the pc breaks and I want to use another one.

Still, it's costing me no extra and I can watch the films anywhere in the house and, in fact, anywhere as I can watch them while disconnected from the internet, such as when on holiday.

Oh, it covers Sky Sports as well but I guess from the themes on this site you can guess I'm not a big sports fan.

i too have signed up for sky by broadband and was frankly a bit disappointed with the selection--i have downloaded 4 movies--but i expected a similar choice to what was being shown on sky at the mo. as i don't have sky plus i was hoping it would give me that benefit.but thanks for telling me you can back up to disc, can you watch them after your 30 days or whatever?

No, when the licence expires you cannot watch the film anyhow. When you back it up to disk it is still encrypted: not playable on a DVD for example. I'm not sure if you can play it from the disk or if you have to copy it back to hard disk.

You are right about the choice: on the tv I'm sure it said something about 1000 movies, the actual choice is much smaller. However, they don't charge any more for it (yet) which cannot be grumbled at. Still, it's got HellBoy which I quite enjoyed.

I've found the software a little buggy: keeps giving errors. Just about works though.

Well I have now mastered the workings of Sky By Broadband.

The benefits are it gives more flexibility as long as I use my laptop and the downloads are pretty quick.

The big disadvantage is the licensing although when enough users begin to challenge this there may be a few ideas which will allow the downloaded movies to be played on DVD players.

There are a couple of hidden files in the download directory which i have not yet copied to my standalone hard drive. Perhaps they are licences ?.

I would be prepared to pay a per item fee if the download could be licence free and therefore available to play on a DVD player.
