Redefining the Impossible

Watching Video's on K750i Phone

Nero Recode, path of Nero Premium 7 can convert AVI files into .mp4 files. This is interesting because it means I can play them on my k750i phone. Just plonk them in the D:\MSSEMC\Media files\video\camera directory on the phone via USB. I recoded them to 100k/s so an eight second video used 800k. At this rate an hour long program would need 360M and hence a 512M or 1G memory stick. It plays in a window within the screen that is about 1 inch diagonal so it's not good for immersive home theatre. Also have to wonder what it does for battery life.

The player has no fast forward button so it's no use for watching Lost.

Turn the joy right and hold a while. And watch Lost :).

I've forgotten my preferred bitrate (about 125k), but the Snatch (1:38 long) needs 109 megs on my memory stick. And it looks very good. Don't forget to convert the audio into mono and the resolution to 176x144 (?). And don't forget that this is kBITS/sec not kBYTEs/sec!

Thanks for that. I would like to know what's at the bottom of the shaft.

Update: doesn't seem to work on my k750i.

Also 'VideoDJ' does not seem to handle .mp4 files.

Nero Recode has a single control that seems to cover both bitrate and resolution. I set it to 100k and an 8 second avi file came out at about 800k so presumably the 100k is bytes/sec.

That is a good point about mono, only music would be worth full stereo and then you don't need pictures anyway.

Any idea on battery life? If I could watch something for an hour and still get a days useful battery life, without a spare battery or charging I'd be happy. The problem is whether to invest in a larger memory stick as these are about the most expensive type of flash card.

Send me a mail to egolist at freemail dot hu I'll reply you a prog which can convert in the format which can be played at your phone. It is mp4, but maybe you need settings which can't be set with your prog. Energy: I watched the Snatch on the phone and as I remember it worked at least 2 days with some radio listening and average use. But I'll test it today.

I'm happy using Nero Recode to convert, thanks. Still interested in battery usage though. I could do the experiment myself but I'm still using the 64M (?) memory stick that came with it. I want to know it's going to be worthwhile before I shell out £50 for a 1G stick.

OK. Experiment taken just for you: The phone was charged yesterday. It was on for about 36 hours. At the begining of the experiment the battery was at 75%. The experiment: Watching the Snatch at full volume through speaker for 60 minutes. Right after the movie the battery was reported at 36%. After 5 minutes the status stabilized and now it shows 55%.

Conclusion: I think you can watch even 2 Losts a day and using the phone without recharging. Derivation: Buy that 1 gig stick and don't hesitate.

Good luck!

Inspired by foldip's experiments below I tried one myself:

  • I ripped a home video from a Video CD by using IsoBuster to copy the 500M .dat file to a .mpg file. You have to use the 'Extract but filter only M2F2 Mpg frames' option to get the file, as explained here.
  • I used Nero Recode to convert it to a 55M .mp4 file. I set the video quality to 100kbps and the audio to 11kbps (which saves an extra 6M).
  • I copied the resulting file to the phone.
  • I found the 'Media Player' application on the phone which can show the film full screen and supports fast forward, pause etc. Before I was opening the file from 'My Items' which seems to use a different video player with no options apart from Play and Stop.
  • I played it for an hour. At the start the battery was on two black bars, at the end it was on one red bar.

Conclusion: should I buy a USB tv tuner and pvr package?

I have a k750i but when i put mpegs on there it shows as a audio file?? why is that.

Don't know. Phone will work out the nature of the file from:

  • location on card
  • file extensions (e.g. .mp4).

I suggest that you check these.
